Much like coffee table styling but with more levels, styling your shelving can be fun. It creates a sort of stage for your favourite things, curated like a small gallery.
Mix up textures, shapes and colour
When selecting your items, look for those with interesting textures or shapes. I’m a big fan of geometric angular looking objects at the moment. If you’re a little nervous of adding colour, use plants and flowers to break up the items.
Create and curate
Create a mini stage for your objects, stand back and move things around. If you take photographs as you go, you’ll be able to remember which formations looked best.
Stack and prop
Who doesn’t love a good stack? If you’re including magazines and fancy books, mix up the formations by stacking or propping. I use my cow’s bum to prop up my books. If you have any vinyl ensure it’s stored upright, to avoid damage and warping.
As Coco Chanel once said “Once you’ve dressed, and before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.” The same applies to your shelving arrangement. I got all over excited as I added more and more bits to my shelves, but then took a step back and it looked shoddy and cluttered. As I removed items, it began to look better.
